First of all, lets establish what “wake” means. To begin waking up in this world, the first thing that has to occur is to be aware of oneself. Most of humanity is walking around in a perpetual sleep meaning that for the most part they are entirely unaware of themselves, what they are thinking and why, what they are feeling and why, and most importantly, what they deeply want for their life. To have awareness of these three things is what begins the waking process. The waking process is actually an integration process. What you are integrating is all the components of you that have come into existence through coping mechanisms first and foremost. These aspects of you are existing in the dark, operating on default. When you begin to have awareness of these aspects, they naturally begin to integrate into the core perception of you. Someone who stays diligent in practicing presence with these components will eventually come to a strongly integrated place and what will be experienced is a state of wholeness. Wholeness feels like confidence, self appreciation, self understanding, and calm. The calm occurs because when someone is in full awareness of themselves and in deep acceptance of themselves, the insecurities which cause anxiety are transformed into their functional state. This sounds simple but in reality it takes a lifetime to achieve and most people never get any where close to achieving it. There are deeper levels of integration that also occur but these are more complex as they are aspects of you that have existed in more than this reality. This level of integration and wakefulness is an advanced stage so we won’t go into it at this time. (But we have created a qigong form to speed up this process.)
Understanding this, the most efficient way to wake people is to help them become aware of themselves. This means that you help them understand their pain, help them feel their pain, help them face their pain, help them establish presence with themselves. Meditation is meant to help you all become self aware. It is meant to be a training in presence that you can become diligent with. As you are able to stretch presence with yourself, your understanding of yourself deepens. As your understanding deepens, you are able to offer more compassion to your pain. This compassion is the most powerful tool for transforming pain. As you engage in this alchemy, you experience more and more integration and therefore more and more wholeness. The whole, un-fragmented human is a truly awake human.
Of course the best way to teach others is by example.
Too many spiritual leaders try to lead others away from their pain. This is a mistake. For it is through the pain that you find the gift which you are calling “the greater life inside”. Specifically, emotional pain acts as a block to accessing this greater life especially when it is avoided, therefore, one MUST learn how to be present with pain and transform pain in order to have connection. Avoidance never leads to awakening. Because of this, any kind of avoidance or denial is a road block to full wakefulness and connection.
What people need to understand is that when you can become present and accepting of your pain, you have the power to transform it into its evolved state. You have the opportunity to experience the gift that the pain taught you. Without uncovering that gift, you will never experience the gift. If you never experience the gift, the greater life inside stays hidden beneath the pain.
